Overview of audience targeting in modern SharePoint sites

By using audience targeting, you can show content to specific groups of people. For example, a business might create and share news relevant to a marketing group.

Note: Some functionality is introduced gradually to organizations that have opted in to the Targeted Release program. This means that you may not yet see this feature or it may look different than what is described in the help articles.

How it's set up

Patti, the SharePoint site owner for Contoso Landings, plans to use audience targeting. News posts are contributed to her site regularly by people across different groups. She wants members of specific groups to see the posts most relevant to them.

First, in Site Pages, she enables the audience targeting feature. Then, she targets some posts to specific audiences. She also enables audience targeting in the News web part on the Contoso Landings main page.

Once she updates the posts, they're filtered based on the target audience after a short delay.

How it's seen

The SharePoint start page, news on the mobile apps, and the News web part with audience targeting enabled, now show filtered views.

Megan, who works in marketing, sees the two news posts targeted for the marketing group. She also sees the post that was not targeted to any specific group.

Nestor, who works in human resources (HR), sees the two posts targeted for HR, and the non-targeted post.

Jerri, who doesn't work in HR or marketing, sees only one post which is open to all audiences.
