Move or rename a folder in Outlook.com

You can drag a folder in Outlook.com to a new spot in your folder hierarchy, or you can use the Move option in the shortcut menu. You can also rename any folders you create.

Choose your version for instructions

The instructions are slightly different depending on whether or not you're using the Outlook.com beta. Choose which version of Outlook.com you're using to see the instructions that apply to you.

Important: There is an ongoing issue where some folders may no longer be visible in the Folders list, but you can find items saved within the missing folders using search. We are aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

Move a folder

Change the order of folders

  • Under Favorites, select and drag a folder up or down in the list.

    Note: You can't change the order of folders under Folders.

Move a folder into another folder

  • Under Folders, select and drag a folder or subfolder over the folder into which you want to move it.

    Notes: 

    • You can't move subfolders into the main Folders menu. Subfolders must always be inside another folder.

    • You can make a subfolder a Favorite (click the star to Add to favorites) to make it appear in the main Favorites list.

Rename a folder

Note: You can't rename default folders such as Inbox, Drafts, or Deleted Items.

  1. Under Folders, right-click the folder you want to rename and select Rename.

  2. Enter a name for the folder and press Enter.

Move a folder

Note: If you move folders you created, the next time you sign in they will be arranged in alphabetical order.

  1. Below Folders, right-click the folder you want to move and select Move.

  2. In the Move folder dialog, choose a new folder into which you want to move the folder, and select Move.

Rename a folder

Note: You can't rename default folders such as Inbox, Drafts, or Deleted Items.

  1. Under Folders, right-click the folder you want to rename and select Rename.

  2. Enter a name for the folder and press Enter.
