Create a new SharePoint list based on the columns in another list

Create a new SharePoint list based on the columns in another list

When you need a consistent and reliable approach to creating similar SharePoint lists, create from an existing list. Or, if you'd rather start from a blank canvas, create a list from scratch.

When a new list is created from an existing one, the entire list structure is copied, including views, formatting, and columns. However, the actual content of the original list will not be copied.

To follow the steps below, use the modern SharePoint experience in SharePoint Online. The sites shown are sites you can edit.

Creating a list from an existing list in the modern SharePoint experience
  1. Select Settings Settings icon and then Site contents.

  2. Select +New, select List, then select From an existing list.

  3. Select the site that has the existing list, then select the existing list.

  4. At the top, under Create a list, enter the name for the new list.

Note: If you want the new list to appear in the site navigation, check the box Show in site navigation.

  5. Select Create.
