Create a new assignment in Microsoft Classroom

Create an assignment

  1. Sign in to Microsoft Classroom as a teacher.

  2. From the Assignments page or a class page, select + New assignment.

  3. Enter a name that will help you and your students recognize this assignment.

  4. Use the drop-down lists to choose a due date and time in the future.

  5. Select the classes that should complete this assignment, then select Done.

Optional: Add instructions, attachments, and discussion

Add instructions

In the text box, enter the details or instructions your students will need to understand the assignment. Paste existing instructions into the box, or create them there. Hyperlinks and some text formatting is available: bulleted and numbered lists, bold, italics, and underlining.

Attach files

To attach a file to the assignment, select Attach, then choose the file. Select Make a copy for each student if you expect them to edit and turn in their own copy of this file. If it’s a resource like a map or instructions, they won’t need their own copy—leave it unchecked.

Allow discussion

Select Allow students to participate in discussion, and students will be able to post comments and chat with each other about the assignment, where everybody can see it.

When class discussion is turned off (unchecked), students can still chat privately with you about the assignment.
