If you frequently work with many shared notebooks and your list of notebooks is getting cluttered, you can close any notebook when it is no longer needed and reopen it again later.

Note: When you close a notebook, you’re only removing it from the list of notebooks displayed. You are not deleting the notebook. If you want to, you can permanently delete a notebook.

OneNote for Windows 10

  1. Click or tap the Show Notebook List button Show Notebooks button until you see the list of notebooks.

  2. Right-click the name of the notebook you want to close, and then click Close This Notebook.

  3. To open the notebook again, click or tap More Notebooks in the Notebooks list.

    Note: For OneNote 2016, learn how to close a notebook, and then reopen it again.

OneNote for the web

  1. Click or tap the Show Notebook List button Show Notebooks button until you see the list of notebooks.

  2. Right-click the name of the notebook you want to close, and then click Close This Notebook.

  3. To open the notebook again, click or tap More Notebooks in the Notebooks list.

OneNote for Mac

  1. Click the Show Notebook List button Show Notebooks button until you see the list of notebooks.

    Tip: To quickly see all notebooks, click the Notebook button at the bottom (available only when the section or page lists are displayed).

  2. Hold the Control key while clicking the name of the notebook, and then click Close This Notebook.

  3. To open the notebook again, click More Notebooks in the Notebooks list.

OneNote for iPad or iPhone

  1. Tap the Show Notebook List button Show Notebooks button until you see the list of notebooks.

    Tip: To quickly see all notebooks, tap the Notebook button at the bottom (available only when the section or page lists are displayed).

  2. Press and hold the notebook name to select the notebook. A checkmark will appear next to the notebook when it is selected.

  3. At the bottom, tap the Close button Close Notebook icon .

  4. To open the notebook again, tap More Notebooks in the Notebooks list.

OneNote for Android

  1. Tap the Back button until you see the list of notebooks.

    Tip: To quickly see all notebooks, tap the Notebook button at the bottom (available only when the section or page lists are displayed).

  2. Press and hold the notebook name, and then select Close notebook.

  3. To open the notebook again, tap More Notebooks in the Notebooks list.
