Write Off dialog box (customer): options and information

Items marked with a double asterisk (**) are available in Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2008 only.

In the Write Off dialog box, you can write off customer bad debts. A payment that a customer fails to make is considered a bad debt. If you cannot collect a payment that is due to you, you can write off a portion or all of the customer's balance.

Open the dialog box

To open the Write Off dialog box, on the Customers menu, point to Customer Lists and then click Customers. In the Customer List, double-click a customer and then on the Customer form, on the Actions menu, click Write Off.

Dialog box options

The dialog box contains the following options.

Option

Description

Date

(Required.) Shows the current date. Click the Date arrow to open the calendar and select another date.

Amount

Type a write off amount.

** When Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 is set up to use foreign currency, the amount is displayed in the supplier account currency.

** Exchange rate

Displays the exchange rate between pounds sterling (GBP) and the customer account currency when Office Accounting 2008 is set up to use foreign currency.

Write off account

(Required.) Click the Write off account arrow and select an appropriate account to hold the bad debt. Click Add a new Financial Account to create a new account. Write off accounts are commonly income types and act as contra-accounts to sales revenues.
