What happens if I add another Office 365 for home subscription plan to my account?

There are different types of Office 365 subscription plans available, including Office 365 Home, Office 365 Personal, and Office 365 University. You can only have one active Office 365 subscription plan per Microsoft account — that’s the email and password you use to install Office.

If you add the same Office 365 subscription plan to your Microsoft account, you’ll still have the same subscription benefits (number of installs and amount of Skype minutes and OneDrive storage) as before — but we’ll extend your current subscription for up to 5 years. If you use an Office 365 Personal product key and you currently have an Office 365 Home subscription you'll be offered a choice to stay with the plan you currently have or be switched to Office 365 Personal.

If you're given the choice, you'll see something similar to this:

Choose to stay with Office 365 Home or switch to an Office 365 Personal subscription.

Choose your action

When you already have an Office 365 Home or Office 365 Personal subscription, the table below summarizes your options when you go from one subscription to the other. To see full subscription details, like how many devices you can install on or the number of Skype minutes, go to Choose your Office.

The number of devices you can install Office on doesn’t change when you stay with the same type of subscription plan. Whether you stay with the same subscription or convert it to a different subscription plan, your online storage capacity per user doesn’t change. For example, if you have only one user on the subscription you’ll have 1 terabyte of storage but if it’s shared between 5 users you’ll have 5 terabytes of storage.

Extend your subscription

When you add an Office 365 subscription plan to an account that already has an Office 365 for home subscription, any remaining time from your current subscription is added to the new one. For example, if you have 6 months left on your current Office 365 Home subscription plan and you add a new yearly Office 365 Home subscription to your account, we’ll extend it to 18 months.

If you try to add too many subscriptions at once to the same account, you’ll get a Redemption Failed error because you can’t exceed the 5-year limit.

Convert your subscription

In most cases, adding a different subscription plan to your Microsoft account automatically switches you to the new plan. But, when you apply an Office 365 Personal product key to an account that currently has an Office 365 Home subscription plan, you’ll be given the choice to stay with Office 365 Home or convert the subscription to Office 365 Personal as shown in the picture, earlier in this article . Once you convert, you’ll immediately change your subscription benefits. To learn more, see the Managing your Office 365 subscription section in Office 365 frequently asked questions. To learn how to convert an Office 365 for home subscription, see Switch to a different Office 365 for home plan.

Important: If you accidently convert your Office 365 Personal, Home, or University subscription, contact Account and billing support to get help.

I have a free offer that came with my computer

You can use the free offer in any of these ways:

  • Redeem the offer now and choose to stay with Office 365 Home. This will add an additional 9 months to your subscription.

  • Redeem the offer now and switch your Office 365 Home subscription to Office 365 Personal. This will add an additional 12 months to your subscription.

  • Redeem the offer now using a different Microsoft account.

  • If you want to stay with your current subscription for now you can wait until your subscription expires and then redeem the free Offer for Office 365 Personal.

If you have an existing Office 365 Home subscription and redeem the offer for a free year of Office 365 Personal, you’ll be asked if you want to convert your existing subscription to Office 365 Personal or stay with Office 365 Home. If you convert to Office 365 Personal that means you’ll only be able to install Office on 1 PC or Mac and 1 tablet and you won’t be able to share your subscription.

To learn how to redeem the free offer and add it to your current subscription, see Switch from Office 365 Home using a product key.
