Use the Accessibility Checker on your Mac to find and resolve accessibility issues

The Accessibility Checker helps you find and fix accessibility issues, just like Spell Checker tells you about possible spelling errors.

The Accessibility Checker shows you a report of the issues it finds, and explains why each issue might create a problem for someone with a disability. Finally, it tells you how to fix the issue.

Accessibility Checker rules

The Accessibility Checker checks your file against a set of rules that identify possible issues for people who have disabilities. Each issue is classified as an Error, Warning, or Tip.

  • Error An issue that makes the contents of a file very difficult or impossible for people with disabilities to understand.

  • Warning An issue that in most, but not all, cases makes the contents of a file difficult for people with disabilities to understand.

  • Tip An issue that won’t prevent people with disabilities from understanding the contents of the file, but could be improved to be more accessible.

Fixing some issues might require you to change, reformat, or update your content.

Accessibility Checker also lets you know about Office features you can use to make your content more accessible.

Use the Accessibility Checker

  1. In Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, select Review > Check Accessibility.

    In OneNote, select Tools > Accessibility.

    In Outlook, while composing an email message, select Options >Check Accessibility.

  2. The Accessibility Checker pane shows the inspection results.

  3. Choose a specific issue to see why you should fix the issue and steps to take to change the content.
