Turn glue on or off

Glue is what keeps Visio shapes and connectors attached to each other, so you can move shapes and keep the connectors attached. If you want to move or work with shapes without the connectors attached, turn the glue off in the Snap & Glue dialog box.

Note: Clearing or selecting the Glue check box changes whether glue is active for any connectors that you add afterward. The existing connectors in your drawing, if any, are not changed. To change existing connectors, you need to directly modify them, as described in Manually glue or unglue connectors, later in this topic.

To deactivate glue for newly created connectors
  1. On the View tab, click the dialog launcher on the Visual Aids group.

  2. On the General tab in Snap & Glue, under Currently active, clear the Glue check box.

    Turn off glue function

The procedure for activating glue for new connectors is nearly the same as for deactivating glue.

To activate glue for newly created connectors
  1. On the View tab, click the dialog launcher on the Visual Aids group.

  2. On the General tab in Snap & Glue, under Currently active, select the Glue check box.

Note: When Glue is selected in Snap & Glue, you can select or deselect the parts of shapes, listed under Glue to, that Visio glues connectors to.

Manually glue or unglue connectors

Select a connector to see if it is glued. A glued connector shows green dots or circles at its endpoints.

Glued connector
The selected connector is glued, indicated by the green endpoints.

An unglued connector shows white or grey dots at its endpoints.

Unglued connector
The selected connector is not glued, indicated by the white and grey endpoints.

Individual connectors can be unglued by dragging the endpoint or using the arrow key.

Unglue one end of a connector

To unglue a connector, drag the connector endpoint away from the connection point of the shape. Only the endpoint you drag is disconnected. If the other end of the connector was glued, it remains glued.

Unglue both ends of a connector

To unglue both ends of a connector, select the connector and press an arrow key.

To unglue several connectors at once, hold the Ctrl key as you select the connectors. Then press an arrow key, and all the selected connectors become unglued from the shapes they connect to.

Glue a connector to a shape

To glue a connector to a shape, drag one of the connector endpoints to one of the shape’s connection points. A green square appears when the connector is glued to the shape.

Tip:  When you connect shapes with the AutoConnect arrows, the connectors automatically glue to the shapes they connect. To learn more about AutoConnect, see Add connectors between shapes in Visio.
