The Text1 through Text30 fields are custom fields that store any text information you want to include in your project about tasks, resources, or assignments. The maximum number or characters you can enter into the Text1-30 fields is 255.

There are several categories of Text1-30 fields.

Data Type    Text

Text1-30 (task fields)

Entry Type    Calculated or entered

Best Uses    Add one of the custom text fields to a task view when you want to display, filter, sort, or edit any custom textual information. Use these custom text fields to further describe details of the task. You can also use custom fields if there is a column of information you want to import into Project, but for which Project doesn't have a corresponding field.

Example    You want to show which department is responsible for each task. You add the Text1 field to the Task Sheet view and rename it to "Dept name." You enter the department name for each task. You sort the tasks using the department name field to show how the tasks are grouped by department or to show the organizational structure of a project.

Remarks    You can create custom value lists, formulas, and graphical indicators for any of the custom text fields and you can create custom attributes or rename the custom text field in the Custom Fields dialog box. Specifying a formula causes the field to become read-only.

You can copy the custom fields you create to other project files in the Organizer dialog box.

Text1-30 (resource fields)

Entry Type    Calculated or entered

Best Uses    Add one of the custom text fields to a resource view when you want to display, filter, sort, or edit any custom textual information. Use these custom text fields to further describe details of a resource. You can also use custom fields if there is a column of information you want to import into Project but for which Project doesn't have a corresponding field.

Example    You want to show the department to which each resource belongs. You add the Text1 field to the sheet portion of the Resource Sheet view and rename it "Dept name." You then enter the department name for each resource. You sort the resources using the department name field to show how the resources are distributed by department or to show the organizational participation in a project.

Remarks    You can create custom value lists, formulas, and graphical indicators for any of the custom text fields and you can create custom attributes or rename the custom text field in the Custom Fields dialog box. Specifying a formula causes the field to become read-only.

You can copy the custom fields you create, along with their custom attributes, to other project files in the Organizer dialog box.

Text1-30 (assignment fields)

Entry Type    Entered

Best Uses    Add one of the custom text fields to the sheet portion of the Task Usage or Resource Usage view when you want to display, filter, sort, or edit any of the custom textual information. Use these custom text fields to further describe details of the assignment.
