Stereotyping is an extensibility mechanism in the Unified Modeling Language (UML). This allows you to extend the vocabulary of UML to create new model elements, based on existing ones.

Note: Creating and editing UML diagrams on Visio for the web requires a Visio Plan 1 or Visio Plan 2 license, which is purchased separately from Microsoft 365. For more information, contact your Microsoft 365 admin. If your admin has turned on "self-service purchasing," you can buy a license for Visio yourself. For more details, see Self-service purchase FAQ.

  1. Open the model diagram in Visio.

  2. Select the element on the diagram that you want to stereotype.

  3. Right-click the element, and on the pop-up menu, select Show Stereotype.

The stereotype appears in guillemets (« ») above the element name.

  4. Type the name of the stereotype that you want to use.
