Show or hide the rulers in Word 2016 for Mac

You can use the horizontal and vertical rulers in Word to align text, graphics, tables, and other elements in your document.

Show or hide the rulers

  • To show the rulers, on the View tab, check the Ruler box. To hide rulers, uncheck the Ruler box.

    The Ruler option is highlighted on the View tab.

    The horizontal ruler displays in Print Layout and Draft views. The vertical ruler only shows in Print Layout view.

  • If the vertical ruler doesn't show, make sure you're in Print Layout view. If it still doesn't show, you might need to turn the ruler on. On the Word menu click Preferences > View (under Authoring and Proofing Tools). Then, in the View dialog box, check the Vertical ruler box.

Change the unit of measure

You can change the unit of measurement displayed on the rulers, to do this:

  1. On the Word menu, click Preferences > General (under Authoring and Proofing Tools).

  2. In Show measurement in units of, select the unit of measurement you want to use.
