Set up email using the iOS Mail app

If you're unable to use the Outlook for iOS app, you can learn how to add email accounts to the built-in iOS Mail app here. To set up your email using Outlook for iOS, see Set up email on Outlook for iPhone or iPad. If you are experiencing sync issues, you can Troubleshoot email setup on mobile.

Set up email in the iOS Mail app

To use the built-in Mail app on your iPhone or iPad, choose your email provider here:

Use these instructions if you have any @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @msn.com, @live.com, @outlook.co.uk, email or any custom domains that are hosted on Outlook.com.

Set up an Outlook.com email in the iOS Mail app
  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. Select Outlook.com.

  3. Enter your Outlook.com account email, such as yourname@hotmail.com, yourname@live.com, or yourname@yourdomain.com. Add your password and a description of your account and then tap Next.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, see What server settings do I need from my email provider to learn more.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

If you have an Office 365 work or school account, use these instructions to set up your email with your iOS device.

Set up Office 365 email in the iOS Mail app
  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. Select Exchange.

  3. Enter your email address, your password, and a description of your account. Your email address should be your Office 365 business account or school account such as yourname@yourdomain.com, yourname@domain.onmicrosoft.com, or yourname@schoolname.edu. Once your credentials have been entered, tap Next.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, see POP and IMAP settings for Outlook Office 365 for business.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

For email accounts and domains that are hosted by Exchange, use these instructions to set up your email.

Set up Exchange email account in the iOS Mail app
  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. Select Exchange.

  3. Enter your full email address, such as yourname@yourdomain.com or yourname@schoolname.edu. Add your password and a description of your account and then tap Next.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, contact your email provider for details. You can also see POP and IMAP settings for Office 365 for Business and go to the section titled "POP and IMAP settings for Exchange-based email" for helpful tips.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

Use your Gmail or Google account in the built-in iOS mail feature.

Set up Gmail in the iOS Mail app
  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. Select Google and then enter your email address, such as yourname@gmail.com. Tap Next.

  3. Enter your password and tap Next.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, find your Gmail server settings here.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

For a Yahoo! email address or account, use these instructions to set up and access your email.

Set up Yahoo! in the iOS Mail app
  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. Select Yahoo! and then enter your email address, such as yourname@yahoo.com. Tap Next.

  3. Enter your password and tap Sign In.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, you can find your Yahoo! IMAP server settings here or Yahoo! POP server settings here.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

If you have an Apple ID and iCloud email account, set up your email with these instructions.

Set up an iCloud email in the iOS Mail app
  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. Select iCloud.

  3. Enter your email address, such as yourname@icloud.com. Add your password and then tap Next.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, you can find additional iCloud mail server settings here.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

If you have an AOL account, set up your email with these directions.

  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. Select AOL.

  3. Enter your name, email address (such as yourname@aol.com), your password, as well as a description of your account. Tap Next.

  4. If you're prompted to enter additional server settings, see how to configure an AOL email account here.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.

If you have an IMAP email or use any other email provider not already listed by the iOS Mail app, use these instructions to set up your email account. If you use IMAP to set up your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will only sync using Exchange ActiveSync.

Set up an IMAP or other email in the iOS Mail app
  1. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then tap Add Account.

  2. At the very bottom, tap Other. Then select Add Mail Account at the top of the list.

  3. Enter your name, email address (such as yourname@contoso.com), your password, as well as a description of your account. Tap Next.

  4. If you're not able to proceed, you may be required to enter additional server settings. Contact your email provider to retrieve your IMAP or POP settings and enter them here.

    Note: If using IMAP or POP to sync your email account, only your email will sync. Calendar and contacts will not.

  5. Choose the apps you want your email account to sync with your iOS device and then tap Save. Your email account is now ready for use with the iOS Mail app.

Note: If you're prompted to create a passcode, tap Continue and type a numeric passcode. If you're prompted and don’t set up a passcode, you can’t view this account on your device. But you can set up a passcode later in your settings.
