Recover a previous version of a document

With Office Online programs saving your work automatically, you might discover that you’d like to recover an earlier version of your document. Especially when more than one person is editing at the same time, it’s nice to know you can go back to the point before mistakes were made.

For Word Online, PowerPoint Online, and Excel Online documents stored on OneDrive:

  1. Go to File > Info > Previous Versions.

    Previous Versions command

  2. In the list of older versions, click to open a copy of the document that was saved at a particular time. When you find the one you want to use as the current version, click Restore.

  3. If you want to save it on your computer, click Download.

To recover an earlier version of a page in a OneNote Online notebook:

  1. Click View > Page Versions.

OneNote Online View menu with Page Versions selected

  2. In the list of older versions, click the version you want to restore, click the message that appears at the top, and then click Restore.

OneDrive for Business

If your document is on OneDrive for Business or in a team library, see Manage document versions in OneDrive for Business.
