This page is a supplement to the Privacy Statement for Microsoft Lync Products. In order to understand the data collection and use practices relevant for a particular Microsoft Lync product or service, you should read both this Privacy Statement and any applicable supplement.

Chat History

What This Feature Does: Chat History contains all messages and files posted to a chat room, whether or not these messages are still in the chat room display.

Information Collected, Processed, or Transmitted: Chat History stores the messages and files posted to a chat room on a server your administrator configures. No information is sent to Microsoft.

Use of Information: You can search for Chat History content in a specific chat room, a specific folder, or across all chat rooms that you are a member of and that have Chat History. You must be a member of a chat room to access its Chat History.

Choice/Control: Chat History is available only for chat rooms in which the feature has been enabled by the chat room manager.

Client-Side Logging

What This Feature Does: Client-Side Logging stores information about your use of Microsoft Lync 2010 Group Chat communications software on your computer, in your user profile. The information can be used for troubleshooting Lync 2010 Group Chat issues you might have.

Information Collected, Processed, or Transmitted: Client-Side Logging stores information on your computer such as session initiation protocol (SIP) messages for your Group Chat interactions. This includes information about the sending computer and the servers that route each Group Chat post, such as IP address and network address. In addition, your Contacts list, IP address, phone number, display name, computer name, presence information, and names of standard, scoped, and private chat rooms that you have created will be stored. However, the content of your Group Chat posts is not stored. Client-Side Logging does not send any of this information from your computer.

Use of Information: Client-side logs can be used for troubleshooting Group Chat issues you might have. The logs are not automatically sent to Microsoft, but you can choose to send them manually.

Choice/Control: Client-Side Logging is turned on by default and cannot be disabled. However, you can access or delete the Group Chat client-side log file, which you can find by doing the following

  1. Open the folder on your computer that contains the Group Chat client-side log file. The location of this folder will be different depending on the operating system you are running:

    • If you are running a Windows 7 or Windows Vista operating system, the folder is at <System Drive>\Users\<User Name>\Tracing.

    • If you are running a Windows XP operating system, the folder is at <System Drive>\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Tracing.

  2. In the folder, choose the file beginning with the name GroupChatConsole. This is the Group Chat log file.

Compliance

What This Feature Does: The Compliance feature allows your administrator to archive both logged and unlogged Group Chat activity, including Group Chat, files, stories, and images.

Information Collected, Processed, or Transmitted: The Compliance feature stores the content of chat messages and information about your chat usage on a server your administrator configures. No information is sent to Microsoft.

Use of Information: Your administrator can use this information to administer your organization’s use of Group Chat.

Choice/Control: The Compliance feature is turned off by default and must be turned on by an enterprise administrator. You should review your company’s data usage and monitoring policies to determine whether the Compliance feature might be enabled.
