Password protect a presentation

Help protect a sensitive or confidential presentation from unwanted edits by assigning a password. You can also prevent a presentation from being opened.

  1. Click File > Info > Protect Presentation > Encrypt with Password.

  2. In the Encrypt Document box, type a password, and then click OK.

  3. In the Confirm Password box, type the password again, and then click OK.


  • You can always change or remove your password, using this same process. To change it, just type a new one in the Encrypt Document box, and to remove it, clear the Encrypt Document box. Confirm the change as usual.

  • Passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure that the CAPS LOCK key is turned off when you enter a password for the first time.

  • If you lose or forget a password, PowerPoint can’t recover your information, so keep a copy of your password in a safe place or create a strong password that you’ll remember.
