Opening documents for reading or editing in a Documents tool in a SharePoint workspace

You can open a document stored in a Documents tool if your computer has an application installed that supports its file type.

If you try to open a document that has an unsupported file type, you see an Open With dialog box that asks you to specify the program to use. For more information on the Open With dialog box, see your Windows documentation.

  1. To open a document, double-click it.

  2. If you want, edit and save the file in its application.

If you save changes to the document, SharePoint Workspace will attempt to upload the changes to the document to the SharePoint server during the next synchronization.

Tip: If you do not want SharePoint Workspace to upload your saved edits at each synchronization, check out the document before you open it.

Note that your ability to upload changes is governed by your permissions on the SharePoint site. If you do not have editing permission, you will be unable to upload the updated version of the document, and you will receive a document upload error. The error message provides options to enable you to resolve the error. In most cases, your best option will be to save the edited file to your computer as a new file.
