In Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, you can save your presentation in the earlier file format (.ppt) in order to view it in PowerPoint 2003 or earlier. However, if you save a PowerPoint 2010 presentation as a PowerPoint 97 - 2003 file, you may lose some of the features and effects available in later versions (PowerPoint 2007 and 2010).
You can also install updates and converters that allow you to view the PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 file format (.pptx) in PowerPoint 2003 or earlier.
Note: You might still lose some PowerPoint 2010 features and effects when using a converter.
Presentations, templates, and slide shows created in the PowerPoint 2010 file format (.pptx) are compatible with PowerPoint 2007.
For more information on the differences between file formats, see File formats that are supported in PowerPoint 2010.
Save your PowerPoint 2010 presentation in PowerPoint 97-2003 format
Important: PowerPoint 97-2003 does not recognize SmartArt graphics and newer visual objects that are available in PowerPoint 2010 and will convert them to bitmaps to maintain their appearance. You cannot change certain aspects of bitmaps, such as line width, fill color, and other PowerPoint 2010 specific properties.
In PowerPoint 2010, open the presentation that you want to save as a PowerPoint 97-2003 file.
Click the File tab.
Click Save As.
In the File name box, enter a name for your presentation, or do nothing to accept the suggested file name.
In the Navigation bar, select the location that you want to save your presentation to, or do nothing to accept the suggested location.
To the right of Save as type, click PowerPoint Presentation, and select PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation.
The file is saved as a PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation (.ppt) file that you can open in PowerPoint 97 through 2003.
Download and install updates and converters for PowerPoint 2003 or earlier
Microsoft Office 2010 supports converters for Office 2000, Office XP, and Office 2003 programs, and the converters support Microsoft Windows 2000. To open, edit, and save your PowerPoint 2010 presentation in PowerPoint 2003 or earlier without first saving it in another file format, you can download the Microsoft Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
On the computer that has a version of PowerPoint earlier than PowerPoint 2007 installed, do the following:
Navigate to the Office downloads Web site.
Download the Microsoft Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
After you install the updates and converters, all PowerPoint 2010 presentations that you open are automatically converted so that you can edit and save them.
You can also just open your PowerPoint 2010 presentation. If you have not yet downloaded and installed the Compatibility Pack, you will be presented with instructions about how to do this.
Important: PowerPoint 97-2003 does not recognize the SmartArt graphics and new visual objects that are available in PowerPoint 2010, and will convert them to bitmaps to maintain their appearance. You cannot change certain aspects of bitmaps, such as line width, fill color, and other PowerPoint 2010 specific properties.
