Stop, you should wait to install Office 2016. We'll have to remove the following if you continue: <app name:>. This app won't work with Office 2016 right now. We're working on a solution.

Error message prompting to remove older apps

If you received the above error message it's because Office 2016, cannot coexist on the same computer with certain standalone Office 2013 applications. This includes any Office 2016 product whether part of an Office 365 subscription or purchased as a suite of applications such as Office Professional 2016, Office Home and Student 2016, or Office Home and Business 2016.

This error can occur if:

  • You have a standalone 2013 app (such as Word 2013) installed on your computer, but a newer version of the app is already included in the Office 2016 suite you're trying to install. For example, since Office 2016 includes the Word 2016 app, then the standalone version of Word 2013 will be removed if you choose Install Anyway, and you won’t be able to reinstall it again on the same computer.

    OR

  • You’re on Deferred Channel for one of the Office 365 for business plans listed in the table below which means any standalone 2013 apps not included in your Office 2016 install such as Project 2013 or Visio 2013 must be removed. If you choose Install Anyway, you won’t be able to reinstall these applications again on the same computer. If you're on Deferred Channel and this impacts you, see the section below for information about what you can do.

What can I do about this?
