Customize the data types of columns you import into the External Data window

The External Data window appears when you use the Link Data to Shapes command on the Data menu to import data into your drawing.

When you import data, the original data types are converted to work with Microsoft Office Visio. You can change the data type of an imported column, or you can add special Visio specifications such as time spans (for example, days or minutes) or measurements (for example, inches or miles) to some data types.

  1. Right-click any column heading in the External Data window, and then click Column Settings.

  2. In the Column Settings dialog box, click the name of the column that you want to change, and then click Data Type.

  3. In the Types and Units dialog box, select one of following options:

    • Type      The options that are available for the remaining settings depend on what you select in the Type list.

    • Units      This setting is available only for duration or number types.

    • Currency     This setting is available only for currency data types.

    • Language     This setting is available only for date types.

    • Calendar     This setting is available only for date types.
