Create a subpage in OneNote for Mac

Subpages are a great way to organize related notes in OneNote for Mac. For example, if you’ve taken lecture notes, you can create one main page for the subject, and split the weekly lecture notes into subpages.

Subpages have their names indented in the page list to indicate their relationship to the main page and any other subpages. You can create subpages up to two levels deep and promote any subpage back to its normal level at any time.

Create a new, blank subpage

To create a new subpage, do the following:

  1. Navigate to any section in your notebook where you want to create a subpage.

  2. Select any existing page and then click + Page at the bottom of the page list. This creates the page that will become the new, blank subpage.

  3. Control-click the new page you just created, and then do either of the following:

    • To indent the page by one level, click Make Subpage one time. OneNote will slightly indent the page name to the right.

    • To indent the page by two levels, click Make Subpage a second time. OneNote will further indent the page name to the right.

Note: You cannot designate an existing page as a subpage if it’s the only page in the current section. A subpage must be preceded by at least one normal page in the page list.

Designate an existing page as a subpage

To change any existing page in your notebook to a subpage, do the following:

  1. Navigate to any section in your notebook that contains at least two pages.

  2. Control-click any existing page under the top page in the current section, and then do either of the following:

    • To indent the selected page by one level, click Make Subpage one time. OneNote will slightly indent the page name to the right.

    • To indent the selected page by two levels, click Make Subpage a second time. OneNote will further indent the page name to the right.

Note: You cannot designate the top page in any section of your notebook. Subpages must be preceded by at least one main page in the page list.

Promote a subpage

Control-click the subpage you want to promote, and then do either of the following:

  • To promote the page by one level, click Promote Subpage one time. OneNote will slightly indent the page name to the left.

  • To promote the page by two levels, click Promote Subpage a second time. OneNote will remove all indentation from the page name.

Delete a subpage

  • To delete a subpage, control-click the subpage you want to delete, and then click Delete.
