Create a Visio drawing from within another program

You can create a Microsoft Office Visio drawing directly from a document in another program that supports OLE.

  1. In the other program, on the Insert menu, click Object (or the appropriate command for that program).

  2. In the dialog box that appears, click the options for creating a new file. Then, under Object Type, click Microsoft Visio Drawing, and then click OK.

  3. In the Choose Drawing Type dialog box, open the folder that contains the drawing type you want, select a template, and then click OK.

  4. Create a Visio drawing.

  5. When you have finished, if Visio is running in its own window, on the File menu, click Exit. If it is running within the other document, click somewhere in the document outside the Visio drawing to close Visio.

  6. To edit the Visio drawing later from within the document, double-click the drawing.

Tip: You can also embed an existing Visio drawing from within another document. Follow step 1 above, and then in the dialog box, select the option to create an object from an existing file.
