Can't sync calendar and contacts with my phone or tablet

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

  • You're on the right page if you're troubleshooting sync issues while setting up your mobile email for the first time.

  • If your email, calendar, and contacts were syncing before and now they don't, see Fix email sync issues or remove a device from Outlook.com instead. If you don't use an Outlook.com or Office 365 for business account, contact your email provider.

Which email app are you using?

RESET YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT

Open Outlook on your phone.

Go to Settings > Tap the account that is not syncing > Tap Reset Account.

VIEW CALENDAR

Go to Calendar and tap the three lines in the upper left-hand corner.

CHECK CALENDAR

Under your email address, make sure "Calendar" is selected. Wait and then check your calendar. If you see your calendar and contacts, you're done!

Note: If your email address is not displayed in the list, it's not set up using Exchange ActiveSync. You'll have to delete and re-add your account using Exchange ActiveSync.

REMOVE, RE-ADD YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT

Step 1

DELETE ACCOUNT

From Settings, tap the account that is not syncing and then tap Delete Account > Delete From This Device.

RE-ADD EMAIL ACCOUNT

Re-add your email account in Outlook for Android or Outlook for iOS.

If you're prompted to set up your email as an IMAP account, your email provider may not be able to sync calendar and contacts. Contact them or your administrator for help.

Note: If you're asked to enter server settings, you can learn about the server settings you'll need from your provider here.

CHECK APP SETTINGS, ENABLE CALENDAR

GO TO SETTINGS

Go to Settings > Accounts.

Note: Different Android devices may look different than the screenshots here. Use these steps as a guideline.

SELECT YOUR ACCOUNT

Tap Exchange > tap your email address that is not syncing.

SYNC CALENDAR

Make sure "Sync Calendar" is enabled. Wait and check your device's calendar app.

Note: If you see IMAP instead of Exchange or a sync error, your email account may have been added incorrectly. Remove it by tapping More > Remove account.

RE-ADD YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT USING EXCHANGE ACTIVESYNC

Step 1

UPDATE/OPEN GMAIL

First, update the Gmail app to the latest version. Open the Gmail app.

Note: You can update Gmail by opening the Play Store app on your phone. Search "Gmail" and then select Update. If update option is not available, you're good to go!

ADD ACCOUNT

Tap the menu icon in the upper left corner > Settings > Add account > Exchange.

FOLLOW PROMPTS

  1. Enter your full email address. Tap Next.

  2. Enter your password and tap Next.

    Note: Need server settings from your email provider?

  3. Accept any security permissions and sync settings.

    If you use Office 365 for business you may also be asked to give additional security control. In this case, choose Activate.

Step 4

ENABLE SYNC

Go to your Gmail inbox. If you see a message from "Microsoft account" with a subject that starts with "Action Required," follow these steps:

Note: If you don't see a message like this and all your emails are syncing, there is no need to complete this step.

  1. Tap the email message to open it.

  2. Tap the click here link to enable sync with the Gmail app.

ALLOW ACCESS

Check to make sure Gmail is allowed access to your calendar and contacts:

  1. Pull down the Android notification bar by swiping down from the top of your device's screen.

  2. Tap "Unable to sync calendar and contacts".

    Note: If you don't see a sync error notification, you're good to go!

  3. Gmail will ask for access. Tap Allow and follow the prompts.

CHECK YOUR CALENDAR

Wait a few minutes and then check your device's calendar.

Note: We also recommend double-checking that your account was added as an Exchange account by going to Settings > Accounts.

GO TO SETTINGS

Go to your iPhone or iPad's Settings > Mail > Accounts.

Note: If you're using iOS 9 or earlier, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Select the account you are trying to sync.

Select the account you are trying to sync.

ENABLE SYNC

Make sure "Calendars" and "Contacts" are enabled and then check your sync again. If it works, you're done!

Note: If you don't see a calendar option, your email address may have been added as an IMAP account. Go to step 4.

DELETE, RE-ADD ACCOUNT

Select Delete Account. Choose Exchange when re-adding your email.

Note: If you do not have a common email provider such as Microsoft, Google, or Yahoo, you may have to contact them to see if your email is limited to IMAP or POP.

CHECK IF IMAP

Go to Settings > Accounts > Exchange > tap your email address.

Note: If it is added as an IMAP account, you will have to delete it and re-add as an Exchange account.

ENABLE SYNC

Make sure "Sync Calendar" is enabled. Wait and check your calendar app.

If you don't see a calendar option or your account was listed as IMAP, tap More and select Remove account. Then go to the next step.

Re-add your email account and choose Exchange ActiveSync or Exchange.

Note: If you do not have a common email provider such as Microsoft, Google, or Yahoo, you may have to contact them to see if it is possible to add email without using IMAP or POP.

CHECK APP SETTINGS, ENABLE CALENDAR

GO TO SETTINGS

Open the Outlook Mail app. Tap the three dots at the bottom to open the menu. Tap Settings.

SELECT YOUR ACCOUNT

Tap Accounts > tap the account you wish to sync.

Step 3

CHECK SETTINGS

Tap Change mailbox sync settings. Check to make sure the settings are as you want them.

Change Server to eas.outlook.com if you use an Outlook.com account such as hotmail.com, or use outlook.office365.com if you have an Office 365 for business account. For all other accounts see Server settings to request from your email provider.

RE-ADD YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT

Step 1

DELETE ACCOUNT

In the Outlook Mail app; open the menu, tap Settings > Accounts > tap your email account > Delete.

Step 2

ADD ACCOUNT

Go back to the Accounts page and tap Add Account.

Tap the kind of account you wish to add:

  • Outlook.com - For @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com email accounts.

  • Exchange - For an Office 365 for business account or accounts using Exchange ActiveSync.

  • Other account - For none of the above. This may set up your email account as IMAP or POP.

Step 3

FOLLOW PROMPTS

Enter your full email address and tap Next.

Add your password and tap Sign In or Next.

Follow any prompts you may get.

CHECK APP SETTINGS AND RE-ADD ACCOUNT

Step 1

GO TO SETTINGS

Go to your phone's settings for mail. This might be in the actual mail app or in your device's settings.

Step 2

SELECT YOUR ACCOUNT

Select the account you are trying to sync, and make sure calendars are enabled.

Step 3

CHECK SETTINGS

If you don't see a calendar option, your email address may have been added as an IMAP account. To fix this, delete your email account and re-add it using Exchange ActiveSync or Exchange.

You may also want to double-check that your server settings have been correctly added.

Note: If you don't have a common email provider such as Microsoft, Google, or Yahoo, you may have to contact them to see if it is possible to add email without using IMAP or POP.

Some key things to remember:

  • To get calendar, contacts, and tasks, you must set up your email using Exchange ActiveSync, not IMAP or POP. What are IMAP and POP?

  • Your must have an email provider that uses Exchange ActiveSync. Most common providers do.

  • For the easiest way to manage email, calendar, contacts, use the Outlook for Android or Outlook for iOS mobile app.
