Add records at Melbourne IT to set up your SharePoint Online Public Website

Note: The SharePoint Online Public Website information in this article applies only if your organization purchased Office 365 prior to March 9, 2015. If you purchased Office 365 after March 9, 2015, use an Office 365 website hosting partner.

Before you rename the site to use your custom domain name, make sure you've finished designing the website (in Office 365) and that you're ready for everyone to see it. Then when you're ready to use your custom domain for the address, you create (at the DNS host for your domain) a CNAME record to point to your customized website.

Add the CNAME record to use your custom domain

First, review one of the two following linked articles (depending on the Office 365 subscription you have) for an overview of the process.

Then, when you’re ready to create the required CNAME record, use the steps in the following table.



Add a CNAME record.

  1. On the Edit DNS records page at the Melbourne IT site, locate the A, CNAME, AAAA Records section.

    To find the Edit DNS records page, see Find your DNS records at Melbourne IT.

  2. In an empty row, in the Record Type drop-down list, choose CNAME.

  3. Add the required information in the empty record:

    • HOSTNAME: Use www.

    • POINTS TO: Use where name is the name of your custom domain, for example

      This value must end with a period (.).

  4. Choose Add to add the record.

    The STATUS for the record changes to Published.

  5. Set the TTL value:

    1. To the right of the Status field, choose Edit.

    2. In the drop-down list, choose 3600.

  6. Choose Update.

Note:  Typically it takes about 15 minutes for DNS changes to take effect. However, it can occasionally take longer for a change you've made to update across the Internet's DNS system. Find your DNS records at the Melbourne IT website

If you need help finding the place where you work with DNS records at Melbourne IT, follow the steps below.


What you’ll see

  1. In your browser, go to your domains at Melbourne IT and sign in.

  2. On the My Account Console page, under Manage Domain Names, choose Manage Domain Names.

  3. On the Manage Domain Names page, select the check box next to the domain that you’re changing.

  4. In the area above the list of domains, select the Manage DNS option button.

    If you see the Manage DNS for selected domain message, choose Go.

    If Manage DNS is not available in the area above the list of domains, you may need to activate your DNS:

    1. Choose the link for the domain you want to change, scroll to the DNS area, and then, on the DNS Status line, choose Activate DNS.

    2. On the Enable DNS page, choose to accept the terms and conditions, and then choose Enable DNS.

    3. Choose Return to My Account Console to return to the Manage Domain Names page.

      You may have to wait while Manage DNS installs.

    4. Choose the link for the domain that you’re changing.

The Manage domain_name page , where domain_name is the domain you are changing, opens.
