Add a running header

The APA format for a running head includes the paper's title on every page. On the title page, the words "Running Head" precede the title.

  1. Click Insert > Header, and then choose Blank.

  2. On the Header & Footer Design tab that appears, check the Different First Page box.

  3. On the first page, click the header area and type Running Head: followed by the abbreviated name of your paper (no more than 50 characters, including spaces).

    This header will appear on only the first page.

  4. Press the Tab key twice. Click the Insert tab, and click Page Number > Current Position > Plain Number.

  5. On the second page, double-click in the header area and type the abbreviated name of your paper.

    This header will be on all pages except the first.

  6. Press the Tab key twice. Click the Insert tab, and click Page Number > Current Position > Plain Number.

Add a header with a different first page

The MLA format for headers is to skip the header on the title page, and to include your last name and the page number on all other pages.

  1. Click Insert > Header, and then choose Blank.

  2. On the Header & Footer Design tab that appears, check the Different First Page box.

    Don't type any text in the header on the first page. You can add a title in the body instead.

  3. On the second page, double-click in the header area and press the tab key twice. Type your last name and press the space bar once.

  4. Click the Insert tab, and click Page Number > Current Position > Plain Number.

Add a fancy header with page numbers

If you'd like to add a header that will make your report stand out, you can choose one of the fancy designs included with Word.

  1. Click Insert > Header, and then choose Facet (odd page).

  2. Double-click the header on the first page and type the name of your report.

    This text will be on all pages with odd numbers.

  3. Scroll down to the second page. Click Insert > Header, and then choose Facet (even page).

  4. Next, double-click the header on the first page and type the name of the report.

Looking for something else?

You can customize the look of your headers using the options in the Header menu.

  1. Click Insert > Header, and choose a style you'd like to use.

  2. Add your header text and select it.

  3. Click the Home tab, and change the font, font size, and color for your header.

  4. If you'd like to add page numbers, click the Header & Footer Design tab and click Page Number.

    Note: The Header & Footer Design tab is also where you can select a different first page, different odd and even pages, and where you can change the positioning of the text in your header.
