Part of setting up your domain with a cloud service like Office 365 operated by 21Vianet includes changing or adding DNS records for your domain, like MX records for email. These changes are required because of how the Internet works with DNS, the Domain Name System. The records you set up for your domain at your domain registrar or DNS hosting provider tell the Internet where to direct network traffic for you. It does this by using the values in the domain’s DNS records, like the MX record for your email.
It might sound complicated, but we will walk you through the steps to get the records set up correctly at your DNS host. And then your domain name will work with all the Office 365 services.
The DNS records required for Office 365
There are several DNS records required for Office 365 to work with your domain. In addition to setting up your domain’s MX record so email will be sent to Office 365, there are records to help with tasks like making sure Outlook can connect to the right Exchange server, setting up Lync, and helping to prevent spam email.
You can also gather the information you need to create Office 365 DNS records right in the Office 365 portal when you're signed in to your account.
What happens when you update the DNS records for a domain
DNS records are stored for each domain wherever the domain's DNS is hosted. You can update the information stored in the DNS records for Internet services, like email and web browsers, to use when they want to know how to direct people to services that use your domain, like email and websites. So, for example, when you update your domain's DNS record for email (the DNS record called the MX record) to point to Office 365, email sent to everyone who uses that domain name in their email address, like email@example.com, will start coming to Office 365.
