In Outlook, you can create a poll by adding voting buttons to an email. The poll responses arrive in your Inbox and are tallied in a tracking view.

Note: A Microsoft Exchange Server account is required.

Create voting buttons

  1. Select Home > New Email, and then create the email

  2. Select Options > Use Voting Buttons.

  3. Select Custom.

  4. In the Properties box, in Voting and Tracking options, select Use voting buttons.

  5. Type the voting choices, and separate the button names with semicolons.

  6. Select Close.

  7. Select Send to send the email


  1. Open the email.

  2. Select Message > Vote.

  3. From the drop-down, select the option to cast your vote.

  4. When the Microsoft Outlook Response box appears, select an option:

    • Send a response now - to send your response immediately.

    • Edit the response before sending - to edit your response before sending.

  5. Select OK.

View the voting responses

  1. When you receive a voting response email, open the email to see the response.

  2. Select Information View and then select View voting responses.

    Note: You can see each Recipient, each Response, and the Reply Totals for each voting option.

Voting buttons in Outlook are a fun and easy way to get quick feedback without having to create complex forms, or do any tabulation yourself.

To create voting buttons, from the Home ribbon tab, click New Email, and then address and create the e-mail as normal.

I'm going to send this one to myself also.

After you've created the body of your e-mail, change to the Options ribbon tab and then select Use Voting Buttons.

Outlook gives you some default choices, but let's click Custom...

I can type in my own choices for voting, as long as I separate them with a semicolon.

I'll click Close, and then I can send my e-mail.

Since I sent the e-mail to myself, I'll double-click on it to show you what the voting process looks like.

Here's where I can read the text of my e-mail.

I told everybody what the choices are, and Outlook is telling me to vote by clicking Vote in the respond group above.

Instead of replying or replying all, or forwarding, I'm going to select Vote.

Here's where I can see all my choices that I created.

I'll cast my vote, and I can either send the response now or select Edit the response before sending if I wanted to include a message.

I'm good for now so I'll click OK.

Now I can close out of the e-mail message.

When anybody casts their vote, I'll get an e-mail.

There's a few things I can do to see the total amount of votes.

I can double-click this e-mail to see the response.

However I can also click the eye with a circle around it and select View voting responses.

This is going to open up a screen where I can see everybody that I sent the vote to, any responses that came in and when they came in, and at the top, I can also see the totals.

When I'm done, I can close out of the response by clicking the X in the top right-hand side, and that is how you easily create voting buttons in Outlook.
