Use Word Online to open documents created in an earlier version of Word

Word Online automatically opens documents created by earlier versions of Word. The first time you open a document created in Word 97 – Word 2003, Word Online automatically converts it to the newest file format and saves it in the new format.

Note: Word Online can only save in the newest (.docx) file format. You can’t save as a Word 97-Word 2003 format document.
