Use chat in Outlook on the web

If you're an Office 365 Enterprise user, you can chat with colleagues in Outlook on the web using Microsoft Teams or Skype for Business.

Note: Which icon you see depends on your organization's configuration of Office 365.

Choose your version for instructions

The instructions are slightly different depending on whether you're using the new Outlook on the web. Choose which version of Outlook on the web you're using to see the steps that apply to you.

Note: If your organization has included its logo in the toolbar, you might see something slightly different than shown above.

Instructions for the new Outlook on the web

  1. In Outlook on the web, at the top of the page, select the chat icon The chat icon  or the Skype icon Skype .

  2. If you selected chat icon, Microsoft Teams will open in a separate browser window.

    If you selected the Skype icon, Skype for Business will open in a chat window.

    Note: Currently, Skype for Business video calls and audio calls in Outlook on the web are only supported in Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

  1. Select Settings  Settings > View all Outlook settings.

  2. Select General > Notifications.

  3. Turn off the notifications you no longer want and select Save.

To manage your Skype for Business or Microsoft Teams contacts, you'll need to sign in to Skype for Business or Microsoft Teams on your computer. For more information, see Add a contact in Skype for Business or View or add contacts in Teams.

Instructions for classic Outlook on the web

  1. On the navigation bar, select the Skype for Business icon Skype .

  2. Choose the Skype for Business task you want to do.

  1. Select the magnifying glass icon Search for contacts .

  2. In the search box, type the name of who you want to contact.

  3. Select the person from the contacts list.

  4. To add the person to your contacts list, select Add To Contacts.

  1. Select the address book icon View your contacts list .

  2. Choose a contact from the list or search for someone else.

  1. Select the plus icon Start a conversation .

  2. In the conversation window, type your message.

  3. To add other people to the conversion, select the add people icon Add other people to the conversation .

  4. You can also start a conversation from the Outlook contact card of the person by selecting the IM icon IM icon on contact card .

  1. Look in the sidebar (below the task symbols) to see if you have active conversations. New messages in these conversations will show an orange badge.

  2. When someone initiates a new conversation with you, you'll be notified by a blue badge on the Skype for Business icon Skype on the Office 365 navigation bar.

  1. Right-click the person's image in the sidebar, and select Close conversation.

  2. You will be asked to confirm that you want to leave the conversation and remove it from the sidebar. Select Close or Cancel.
