Switch your Office license

If you own more than one Office 365, Office 2019, or Office 2016 license, you can switch an Office install from one license to another. For example, if you installed Office 2016 and later decide to subscribe to Office 365, you don't have to uninstall Office 2016 and install Office 365. Instead, you can switch the license in your current Office install from Office 2016 to Office 365.

You can also enter an Office 365, Office 2019, or Office 2016 product key to switch the license of an Office install. This is useful if you own multiple one-time purchases of Office, such as Office Home & Business, and accidentally installed the same copy on multiple devices. You no longer need to use a command-line tool to manually switch to a unique product key for each Office install.

After you switch to another license, your Office install automatically installs or uninstalls apps to match the license you selected. You'll need to restart your Office apps to finish the process.

To switch to another Office license

These procedures work for Windows versions of Office 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016. You can't switch to or from volume license versions of Office.

To switch to an Office license using an account

  1. In any Office app, select File > Account > Change License.

  2. If necessary, sign in using the account that has the license you want to switch to.

  3. After you sign in or select Next to continue, one of the following occurs:

    • If only one other eligible license is available, Office picks that license automatically and begins the update process.

    • If you have multiple Office licenses, pick the license from the list that appears. Office begins the update process.

  4. Close all Office apps to finish the process.

To switch to an Office license using a product key

  1. In any Office app, select File > Account > Change License.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If you're signed in, select Use a different account, and then select Enter product key instead.

    • If you're not signed in, select Enter product key instead.

  3. Enter your Office 365, Office 2019, or Office 2016 product key, and then select Install this product instead.

If your product key is new, follow the prompts to complete the redemption process.

  4. Office begins the update process. Close all Office apps to finish the process.

Tips for switching Office licenses

Here are some things to keep in mind when switching Office licenses

  • If there are no eligible Office licenses available, you'll see Try another account.

  • Switching an Office 365 for home install from one Microsoft account to another isn't supported.

  • If there are multiple one-time purchase Office products available, Office will show you all of them, even the ones that have already been activated.

  • If you switch to a license that has fewer apps, and then switch to a license that has more apps, you may need to reinstall Office so that all apps in your Office suite are available. For example, if you switch from Office 365 ProPlus to Office 365 Home, and then switch back to Office 365 ProPlus, you'll need to reinstall Office 365 ProPlus so that Skype for Business is reinstalled.
