In Office 365, you can reset passwords for users and let employees reset their own passwords. See Reset your own password if you're trying to reset your password or helping a user reset their password.

Reset a user's password

  1. From the Office 365 admin center, under Users, choose Reset a password.

  2. Select the user, and then choose Select.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Select Auto-generate password to have a random password automatically created.

    • Select Let me create the password to manually create a new password.

    • To require the user to create a new password the next time he or she signs in, select the Make this user change their password when they first sign in check box.

  4. Choose Reset.

  5. To send the password to the employee's alternate email address or any address you choose, select Send password in email, enter the email address in the box, and then choose Send email and close.

Let employees reset their own passwords

  1. From the Office 365 admin center, choose Settings, and then choose Security & privacy.

  2. Under Let people reset their own passwords, choose Azure AD admin center.

  3. Choose Users and groups, and then choose Password reset from the menu on the left.

  4. Choose All, and then choose Save.

The next time your employees sign in to Office 365, they’ll be asked for additional contact information, an alternate phone number, or email address. That way, if they forget their password again, they can have a new one sent to them.

Reset your own password

Once Office 365 has been set up to allow resetting passwords, you or your employees can reset your password by visiting passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.

As the admin for your business, one of the common problems you’ll have is employees forgetting their passwords. With Office 365, you can reset it for them and even set up it up so that employees can reset their own passwords.

To do this, sign in to Office.com with your work email. Then choose Admin. Under Users, select Reset a password. Choose the person who forgot their password. Then Select.

You can auto-generate a random password or create one. Let’s choose Auto-generate, but leave this check box selected so they will have to create their own password when they sign in. Then Reset.

To get the new password to this employee, write this one down or email it. You can send it to yourself as the admin and send it to the employee’s alternate email address, like a personal account, where they can see the password. Then Send email and close.

As you can see, this could become time-consuming every time someone forgets their password. A better approach is to let everyone reset passwords on their own.

To do this, go to Settings, then Security & privacy, and choose Azure AD admin center. Go to Users and groups, then Password reset. Choose All, then Save. Close the Azure AD admin center.

The next time one of your employees signs in to Ofice 365, they’ll be asked for additional contact information, an alternate phone number, or email address. That way, if they forget their password again, they can have a new one sent to one of the addresses they provided. And you don’t have to fix it for them.
