Insider release notes for Office for Windows desktop

Last updated: December 7, 2018

This article contains release notes for Insider builds of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, and Project for Windows desktop. Every week, we’ll highlight interesting new features, important fixes, and any significant issues we want you to know about. Note that we often roll out features (and sometimes even fixes) to Insiders over a period of time. This allows us to ensure that things are working smoothly before releasing the feature to a wider audience. So, if you don’t see something described below, don't worry you'll get it eventually.

Word

Collaborate more effectively with @Mentions in Word Comments

Collaboration just became a whole lot easier! Now you can @mention teammates in document comments and they will automatically receive an email notification drawing them into the document.

@mentions generate email notifications automatically. The emails sent link directly back to the specific document and comment within that document, helping users get answers to their questions faster and with better context.

Getting Started:

  1. Type ‘@’ in a comment and type the name, or select your mention recipient from the people picker.

    Word @mention feature

A notification will be sent once the doc saves.  The email notification will have a link to the specific comment in the document (it will open in Word Online).

    @mention

  2. If the mentionee doesn’t have permissions for the document, you’ll be prompted to give them permission.

Known Issues:

  1. Email notification links currently only work properly when clicked on Web or Desktop. Mobile support coming soon.

  2. If the mention recipient has automatic replies turned on for email, you will receive that message.

PowerPoint

Collaborate more effectively with @mentions in PowerPoint

You can now @mention your teammates in PowerPoint comments, and they will automatically receive an email notification with a link to the slide you want them to see.

This feature automatically notifies your colleagues if you have mentioned them in a comment, and gives the recipients a link to the slide where you mentioned them. Now you no longer have to reach out to your collaborators yourself to ask them to look at a specific slide - PowerPoint does the work for you

Getting Started:

  1. Type ‘@’ in a comment and select your mention recipient from the people picker.

    @mentions PPT

A notification will be sent once the doc saves. The email notification will have a link to the specific comment in the document.

Mentions in comments will send an email with a link to the recipient.

  3. After a user has been @mentioned in Desktop Mac and Win32, there is no mechanism to reinvoke the people card.

Visio

Relink the source Excel workbook for Data Visualizer diagrams

Relink source data enables users to modify the link of the source Excel workbook for the Data Visualizer diagrams. Once the source Excel workbook for a Data Visualizer diagram is renamed or moved to a different location the link between the diagram and data breaks. Relink source data solves this problem for the users by enabling them to link the diagram to the Excel workbook again. Thus ensuring that they can use the two-way sync between diagram and data!

Getting Started:

  1. Open an existing diagram created using the Data Visualizer templates in Visio (File>New>Templates>Flowchart).

  2. Select the diagram container or any shape inside the diagram to see the Data Tools Design contextual tab in the ribbon.

  3. Select Relink Source Data under the Source Data section of this ribbon tab to open the Relink Source Data dialog.

  4. Browse to the Excel file location and select the Table/ Range and select Relink.

We are experimenting with additional improvements to the Speedy Lookup feature in Insiders Fast. The data we will gather during this time is critical for us to get these new changes right. When we have completed our experimentation we will introduce Speedy Lookup to Fast and inform you that we have turned it back on. We apologize for any inconvenience and deeply appreciate your continued participation.”

Line Focus in Learning Tools

Line Focus helps make it easier to focus on specific lines of text while reading. You can personalize how many lines of text are brought into focus while reading without distractions, choosing between one, three, or five lines.

A common theme we hear from students, teachers, dyslexia specialists and other reading experts is about making it easier to focus on specific lines of text while reading. Some educators use the concept of Reading Rulers or similar types of devices that can be put onto the physical page, to help students. With this feedback in mind, and following on from the successful launch of this feature in OneNote and other Learning Tools endpoints, we are bringing Line Focus capability to Word Desktop as well. A user can personalize how many lines of text are brought into focus while reading without distractions, choosing between one, three, or five lines. This can be combined with the existing Theme color to allow users to pick a theme color that works best for them. As with other Learning Tools support in Word Desktop we also support editing while in this mode.

Getting Started:

Available in View -> Learning Tools -> Line Focus

Lineview

Scenarios to Try:

Try the feature out by opening a Word document and navigate to the View tab, enable Learning Tools, and turn on the Line Focus feature.

Dynamic array support

With dynamic arrays you can write a single formula that returns a list of values. One formula, many values. And because Excel’s grid now understands arrays, we’ve added amazing new functions that work with lists. So, for instance, you can use the SORT function to sort a list, the UNIQUE function to remove duplicates from a list, the FILTER function to extract an interesting subset from a list. And when your data changes, the dynamic array will resize and recalculate on the fly.

Getting Started:

  • Type some numbers in cell A1 through A10

  • In cell B1 type =SORT(A1:A10)

Stop seeing reminders for past events in Outlook

Now, you can set your calendar to automatically dismiss reminders for events after they've ended. When you've been away from your desk for a few hours, or when you've been out of the office for a week, the Reminders dialog in Outlook shows lots of old meetings that happened in the past. This new option lets you keep the Reminders dialog clear of meetings in the past that you no longer need to be reminded about. (Some users like to keep old meeting in their Reminders dialog to remember to send notes or take other follow-up actions, so we've made this an option to continue supporting that workflow.)

Getting Started

  • From Outlook: File > Options > Advanced. Find the "Reminders" section on this dialog.

  • Check the option to "Automatically dismiss reminders for past calendar events".

Scenarios to try

Use Reminders as usual; observe whether the reduction of noise in the Reminders dialog has any impact on your workflow or focus.

Finding a room gets a littler easier

The Room Finder add-in now lets you reserve conference rooms from more than 1 room list. (Room Finder used to delete previously selected rooms when the user changed room lists.) Room Finder will also remember and automatically show available conference rooms from the user's most recently used room list. This will make it faster to find a room, since the rooms' availability can be retrieved while the user is filling in other meeting details.

Getting Started:

  1. Create a meeting in Outlook. The Room Finder add-in appears as a pane alongside the meeting form.

  2. Select a room list and choose an available Room.  With these improvements, you can now:

Scenarios to Try

  1. Change the room list without losing the selected room.

  2. Create another meeting and the room list will automatically be chosen for you.

  3. Choose multiple rooms (from more than 1 room list) for a meeting. For example, a team meeting between two co-located offices may include conference rooms from two different cities.
