Start a file with Office on the web

Let’s say you’re planning a vacation with friends. You start by creating a spreadsheet in Excel for web and adding a table. In the header row you add each day of your itinerary. In the first column, you add labels like “breakfast,” “day activity,” “lunch,” “afternoon activity,” and “dinner.”

Try it yourself

  1. Go to www.office.com/signin.

  2. Sign in or create a new Microsoft Account.

  3. Select the Office app you want to use and prep it for collaboration.

After signing in to www.office.com, select the app you want to use.

Prep your office file for collaboration

Share it with friends or family

Now that you’ve prepared the spreadsheet and it’s ready to be filled it, you can share it with your friends by entering their email addresses or by creating a shareable link. Now everyone joining you on the vacation can easily access the file at anytime and anywhere to help you plan.

Try it yourself

  1. In your new file, select Share.

  2. Enter the email addresses of those you want to share the file with.

Or, create a shareable link to send via email or IM.

Select Share to share with your collaborators.

Enter the email addresses of those you want to collaborate with or get a link to share the file with.

Collaborate in real time

In your online spreadsheet, Linda adds restaurant suggestions she’s found near the hotel to the row marked for “dinner” and Todd adds links to venues he wants to visit. Everyone is in the spreadsheet at the same time, entering fields, adding comments, and more. You can even see who is currently in the file and start a conversation with in-document chat.

Try it yourself

  1. You can see where collaborators are in the file as well as see who’s editing with you in the upper right-hand corner.

  2. Select Comments to see and address the comments others have left.

  3. If you want to chat in real-time with others in the file, select the chat icon to start a conversation. (This is a premium Office for the web feature.)

You can see who's in the file with you when editing in real time.

Select Comments to view or reply to comments others have left.

Light-weight, free, and accessible on any device with a browser, Office for the web connects you to important documents from anywhere. Print the file, save a local copy to your device, and more with the final version.
