Add, change, or delete the background of a document

With Microsoft Word for Mac, you can easily add a background element, such as a watermark or picture, or a background color to your document.

Add or change a background image or watermark

  1. On the Design tab, click Watermark.

  2. Do one of the following:

    Add or change a background image

    Click Picture, click Select Picture, browse through your image files, and then click the image that you want to use, and then click Insert. If you want the background image to show with full color intensity, clear the Washout check box.

    Add or change a text watermark

    Choose Text, and in the text box, enter the text you want. You can choose the font, size, transparency, font color, and orientation of the text watermark.

Change the background color of a document

  1. On the Design tab, click Page Color.

  2. Click the color that you want, or mix your own color by clicking More Colors.

Remove a background image or watermark

  1. On the Design tab, click Watermark.

  2. Choose No watermark.

  1. On the Design tab, click Page Color.

  2. Choose No Color.

  1. On the Layout tab, under Page Background, click Watermark.

  2. Do one of the following:

    Click Picture, click Select Picture, browse through your image files, and then double-click the image that you want to use. If you want the background image to show with full color intensity, clear the Washout check box.

    Add or change a text watermark

    Choose Text, and in the text box, enter the text you want.

Change the background color of a document

  1. On the Layout tab, under Page Background, click Color.

  2. Click the color that you want, or mix your own color by clicking More Colors.

    Note: To add a pattern to the colored background, click Color and then click Fill Effects.

Remove a background image or watermark

  1. On the Layout tab, under Page Background, click Watermark.

  2. Choose No watermark.

Remove the background color of a document

  1. On the Layout tab, under Page Background, click Color.

  2. Choose No Fill.
