Rename your file with a meaningful, descriptive name, so it's easy to find later.

Rename a file in an online app

  1. Select the file name at the top of the page.

  2. Enter a new name.

    Changes are saved automatically in the Office Online apps.

Save a copy with a different name in a desktop app

  1. Select File > Save As.

  2. Select where you want to save the file.

  3. Enter a new file name.

  4. Select Save.

Rename a file in File Explorer or OneDrive

  1. Open File Explorer or OneDrive.

  2. Right-click the file and select Rename.

  3. Enter a new file name and press Enter.

Rename your file with a meaningful, descriptive name, so it's easy to find later.

To rename a file in an Office online app, just select the name at the top and type a new name.

Your change saves automatically.

If you’re working in a desktop app, and want to save a copy of the file with a different name, select File > Save As.

Choose where you’d like to save the file, type the new file name, and select Save.

You can also rename a file in File Explorer or OneDrive.

Just right-click the file and select Rename.

Then type a new name and press Enter.

And you’re done!
