Remove the background from a picture

Remove the background from a picture to highlight the photo's subject or remove distracting detail.

Note: This feature is only available for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  1. Select your photo.

  2. Select the Picture Tools > Format tab and select Remove Background.

  3. From the Background Removal tools:

    • Select Mark Areas to Keep and draw on the areas you'd like to save.

    • Select Mark Areas to Remove to draw around what you'd like to take out.

  4. Select Keep Changes when you're done.

  5. If you'd like to save your edited image as a separate file, right-click the photo and select Save as Picture.

In Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, you can remove the background from a picture to highlight the image's subject, or remove distracting detail.

To remove the background, select the picture.

Select the Picture Tools > Format tab, and then select Remove Background.

You may see parts of the picture you’d like to keep marked for removal.

If you need to edit changes, use the Background Removal tools.

Select Mark Areas to Keep and draw on the areas you’d like to save,

and select Mark Areas to Remove to draw around what you’d like to take out.

When you're done, select Keep Changes.

These changes only apply to the image in your file.

If you'd like to save the edited image as a separate file, right-click the photo and select Save as Picture to keep a copy.
