Export contacts

In Outlook, you can export your contacts into a .pst file to make them portable and easier to move.

  1. Select File.

  2. Select Open & Export > Import/Export.

  3. Select Export to a file > Next.

  4. Select Outlook Data File (.pst) > Next.

  5. Under the email account you want to export contacts from, select Contacts.

  6. Select Browse... and go to where you want to save your .pst file.

  7. Type in a file name and then select OK.

    Note:  If you’ve previously exported a .pst file, the name of your last file will be in the dialog box—you’ll have to overwrite it. And if you're exporting to an existing .pst, under Options, specify what to do when exporting items that already exist in the file.

  8. Select Finish.

  9. To set a password to protect your .pst file, type yours in the Password and Verify Password boxes, once more to confirm, and then select OK.

    Note: If you'd like to bypass setting a password, leave the password boxes blank and select OK.

Export contacts from Outlook

Import contacts to Outlook

If you need to export your contacts from Outlook, you can copy them into a .pst file—this will help make your contacts portable and easier to move.

In your Outlook ribbon, choose File.

Choose Open & Export, and then choose Import/Export.

Now, choose Export to a file and then click Next

and then choose Outlook Data File (.pst) and click Next.

Choose Contacts under the email account you want to export from,

and then Browse… to where you want to save your .pst file.

We’ll select our Desktop for now.

Type in a file name and click OK

and then click Finish.

A password can help protect your file.

Type yours in the Password and Verify Password boxes, once more to confirm, and then click OK.

With your contacts successfully copied into a .pst file, your address book is now portable!
