Use a screen reader to organize documents into collections and control privacy on Docs.com

Docs.com is a great tool for showcasing and discovering Office documents for free. You can easily use keyboard shortcuts and a screen reader to organize documents into collections and control privacy on Docs.com.

Create a new collection and control its privacy setting

  1. Navigate to Docs.com, and sign in with your Office 365 account. Or sign in to your Office 365 account, and then open the Docs.com app.

  2. To turn on the Accessibility view, press the Tab key until you hear “Accessibility view, Link.” Press Enter.

  3. To move to the Add new link, press the Tab key until you hear “Add new, Button.” Press Enter.

  4. Press the Down Arrow key until you hear “Collection,” and then press Enter. As the Name your collection page opens, you hear “Name your collection.”

  5. Type the title of the collection.

  6. To move to the visibility options (privacy settings) for the collection, press the Tab key until you hear “Visibility.” Press Spacebar.

  7. Press the arrow keys until you hear the name of the visibility option you want.

  8. To create the new collection, press the Tab key until you hear “Create new collection, Button.”

  9. As the new collection is created and the page for the collection opens, you hear the name of the collection, followed by “Docs.com.”

Open an existing collection

Important To complete the steps in this procedure, use Narrator.

  1. Navigate to Docs.com, and sign in with your Office 365 account. Or sign in to your Office 365 account, and then open the Docs.com app.

  2. To turn on the Accessibility view, press the Tab key until you hear “Accessibility view, Link.” Press Enter.

  3. To move to the Collections link, press the Tab key until you hear any of the following: “Home, Link,” “Journal, Link,” “Documents, Link,” or “Collections, Link.” If you heard anything other than “Collections, Link,” press the Right Arrow key or the Left Arrow key until you hear “Collections, Link.”

  4. To move to one of your collections, press the Tab key until you hear the name of the collection you want. Press Enter.

  5. As the page for the collection opens, you hear the name of the collection, followed by “Docs.com.”

Add documents to a collection

  1. Navigate to Docs.com, and sign in with your Office 365 account. Or sign in to your Office 365 account, and then open the Docs.com app.

  2. To turn on the Accessibility view, press the Tab key until you hear “Accessibility view, Link.” Press Enter.

  3. Do either of the following:

  4. To add documents to the collection, do any of the following:

    • To add new documents from your computer, a website, Sway, Office Mix, or OneNote, press the Tab key until you hear “Publish new, Button.” Press Enter. As the Publish page opens, you hear “Publish, Docs.com.” To find out how to use a screen reader to use the various publication options on the Publish page, refer to Use a screen reader to upload documents and set their properties on Docs.com.

    • To search for content by using Bing, move the focus to the Find content for your collection box by pressing the Tab key until you hear “Search with Bing or enter a web address.” Type a keyword, and then press Enter. To select the search result you want, press the Tab key until you hear the result you want. To add it to the collection, press the Tab key until you hear “Add to collection, Button,” and then press Enter. To exit the search results and return to the collection page, press the Tab key until you hear “Done, Button.” Press Enter.

      Tip After you’ve added content to your collection, the Find content for your collection box is no longer available. Instead, select the Add links button, and then press the Tab key until you hear “Search with Bing or enter a web address.”

    • To add content from a website, move the focus to the Find content for your collection box by pressing the Tab key until you hear “Search with Bing or enter a web address.” Type a web address (URL), and then press Enter.

      Tip After you’ve added content to your collection, the Find content for your collection box is no longer available. Instead, select the Add links button, and then press the Tab key until you hear “Search with Bing or enter a web address.”

Control the privacy setting for individual documents

Important To complete the steps in this procedure, use Narrator.

  1. Navigate to Docs.com, and sign in with your Office 365 account. Or sign in to your Office 365 account, and then open the Docs.com app.

  2. To turn on the Accessibility view, press the Tab key until you hear “Accessibility view, Link.” Press Enter.

  3. To move to the Documents link, press the Tab key until you hear any of the following: “Home, Link,” “Journal, Link,” “Documents, Link,” or “Collections, Link.” If you heard anything other than “Documents, Link,” press the Right Arrow key or the Left Arrow key until you hear “Documents, Link.”

  4. To move to one of your documents, press the Tab key until you hear the name of the document you want.

  5. To change the properties for the document, press the Tab key until you hear “Choose an option, Button.” Press Enter.

  6. To select the Edit button, press the Tab key until you hear “Edit, Button.” Press Enter.

  7. As the Edit details page opens, you hear “Edit details.”

  8. To change the Visibility properties (privacy settings) for the document, press the Tab key until you hear “Visibility.” Press Spacebar.

  9. Press the arrow keys until you hear the name of the visibility option you want.

  10. To save the new properties, press the Tab key until you hear “Save, Button,” and then press Enter.

  11. As the home page for the user opens, you hear the name of the user, followed by “Docs.com.”

Modify the privacy setting for an existing collection

  1. Open an existing collection.

  2. To edit the properties for the collection, press the Tab key until you hear “Edit, Button.” Press Enter.

  3. To change the Visibility properties (privacy settings) for the collection, press the Tab key until you hear “Visibility.” Press Spacebar.

  4. Press the arrow keys until you hear the name of the visibility option you want.

  5. To save the new properties, press the Tab key until you hear “Save, Button,” and then press Enter.

  6. As you return to the page for the collection, you hear the name of the collection, followed by “Docs.com.”
