Word for the web automatically opens documents created by earlier versions of Word. The first time you open a document created in Word 97 – Word 2003, Word for the web automatically converts it to the newest file format and saves it in the new format.

Note:  Word for the web can only save in the newest (.docx) file format. You can’t save as a Word 97-Word 2003 format document.
