SQL Server 2008 cannot be installed until your computer is restarted

The SQL Server 2008 Express installation program checks for "restart required" notifications from the version of Windows that your computer is running. If the program finds a notification that your computer should be restarted, SQL Server will not install. You must restart your computer, and then start the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program again.

If, after restarting your computer and the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program, you are again prompted to restart your computer, do the following:

  1. Check to see if Windows Update lists any important updates for you to install and then please install them.

How do I open Windows Update?

    1. Click Start, and then point to All Programs.

    2. Click Windows Update.

  2. Please restart your computer if you are prompted to restart it.

  3. Start the Business Contact Manager setup program again.

If SQL Server 2008 Express still will not install, download and install SQL Server 2008 Express Runtime from the Microsoft web site. Then run the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program again.

You might also want to check the Business Contact Manager log file, Temp\BCMrebootcheck*.log, for information about issues that are related to restarting your computer.

Note:  The asterisk (*) represents letters and numbers in the file name.

Open your Temp folder and the BCMrebootcheck*.log file

  1. Do the following:

    • In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.

    • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click Start.

  2. Type %temp% and then press ENTER.

Note:  %Temp% represents the path, usually C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Temp, to your Temp folder.

  1. Open the BCMrebootcheck*.log file.

The setup program cannot install SQL Server 2008 Express because another version of SQL Server is installed

If SQL Server is already installed on your computer, the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program may not be able to install SQL Server 2008 Express.

Uninstall the other version of SQL Server, and then run the Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010 setup program again.

Use the following procedure to remove the existing version of SQL Server.

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Do the following:

    • In Windows XP, if necessary, click Switch to Classic View, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.

    • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click Control Panel, and then under Programs, click Uninstall a program.

  3. Click Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and then click Uninstall.

If other programs also use SQL Server 2008, you will be prompted to specify the instance that you want to remove. Choose the MSSMLBIZ instance.

SQL Server 2008 Express might not install if there’s another version of SQL Server on your computer for various reasons. For example, if the existing version of SQL Server is in a different language than the version of SQL Server 2008 Express that is being installed, the install will fail. Another reason the installation could fail is because the permissions on the version of SQL Server that is installed on the computer prevent the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program from updating some SQL Server files.

Check the SQL Server log files

The SQL Server install program creates several log files while installing SQL Server. If there is a problem installing SQL Server, first open a file named Summary.txt. The file indicates which log files contain more detailed information about why SQL Server could not be installed. Look for the Summary.txt file in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\

If the SQL Server Summary.txt file says that the SQL Server installer completed successfully but the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program says that SQL Server is not installed, do the following.

  1. Open your %Temp% folder.

    1. Do one of the following:

      • In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.

      • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click Start.

    2. Type %temp% and then press ENTER.

      Note:  %Temp% represents the path, usually, C:\Users\user name\App Data\Local\Temp.

  2. Open the BCMSetupWizardtmp*.log file with the most recent date.

Note:  The asterisk (*) represents letters and numbers in the file name.

  3. Look for information about any errors that have occurred.

Other folders where SQL Server log files are created

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSMLBIZ\MSSQL\Log

Note:  On 64-bit versions of Windows, the path will start with C:\Program Files (x86).

Why Business Contact Manager for Outlook also installs SQL Server 2008 Express

Business Contact Manager for Outlook stores your data in a SQL Server database named MSSMLBIZ. The database is an instance of SQL Server. Other programs might also use SQL Server, but not the same instance that is used by Business Contact Manager for Outlook.

When you start the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program, it checks to see if SQL Server is already installed. If not, the SQL Server 2008 Express install program is run first. Then, the Business Contact Manager for Outlook setup program runs.
