Teams and channels on mobile devices

Desktop or web app user? See Teams and channels in the desktop and web app.

Teams are groups of people working together on different projects. Channels are like chatrooms for your entire team.

Organize your channels by topic, location, project, or discipline. You need to be a team owner to add members, but anyone on the team can add channels.

Work in teams

When you favorite a team, it appears in your team list. Tap Teams and go to the bottom of the list of teams and channels. Tap All teams (Android and Windows Phone) or See all teams (iOS). Then tap Favorite Select to favorite an item for the team or teams you want to favorite.

To reorder your teams, go to your list of teams on the desktop or web app. Then click and drag the team name anywhere in your team list.

To @mention someone in a channel, tap @ in the compose box and type their name. That's the easiest way to get someone's attention in a conversation.

The best way to make sure someone on your team sees your message is to @mention them. Type @ before someone's name and they'll get notified. To get the attention of your entire team, type @team or @general before your message, and all your teammates will receive notifications.

@mentioning a team or channel

Typing @channel before your message notifies all team members who have favorited that channel about your message!

Just FYI, @team and @channel mentions must be enabled by team owners!

You can access someone's contact card from their profile picture.

Android

In a chat or channel, tap someone's profile picture to see their contact card. In a group chat, tap More options More options button in the header for the chat details. From there, tap the person's profile picture.

iOS

It’s always good to leave a party when it’s over.

You can't delete a team from the mobile app; that's something only team owners can do in the desktop or web app.

You can only create new teams on the desktop or web app for now, but we're working on adding this option to mobile.

If you can't create a team on desktop, it's probably because your organization has decided to only enable team creation for a limited group of people.

Does your team need a new name? That’s done in the desktop or web app (and only by team owners). The good news is, now you know where to go and who to talk to!

Add guests to teams

Guest access is available on Android and coming soon for iOS.

Good news—you can now add guests to your team! But you can’t do it from the mobile app yet. For details, see the desktop article How do I add guests to a team?

Note: Guests need a work or school account for Office 365.

Team owners can set guest permissions, but only from the desktop or web app. For a full rundown, go to the desktop article How do I set guest permissions?

To switch between a guest account and other Teams accounts, tap More, then Switch accounts, and pick the account you want.

The quickest way to see if your team has any guests is to check below the conversation header.

You can tell if someone is a guest by looking anywhere their name appears—the word “Guest” appears after it. You can also see everyone’s roles in the Members tab of a team.

When you add a guest, only their name gets added to their contact card. To add or change other info (such as phone number or title), contact your IT admin.

Need to work with someone from outside of your organization? Add them as a guest! Guests can participate in channels, conversations, chats, and meetings; they can share files in channels, add new channels, and use Wiki.

We don't currently have private channels, but we're working on it! To keep things private in the meantime, you can create a new team (on the desktop or web app) and invite a more select audience.

To let someone know you’ve created a channel, @mention them within the channel and they’ll get a notification. Additionally, when you create a new channel, a message appears in the General channel of that team letting users know about it.

Want to change the name of a channel?

On Android, tap Teams > More options More options button > Manage channels. Then tap More options More options button next to the channel name and select Update channel.

On iOS and Windows Phone, team members can change a channel name from the desktop or web app. For details, see the desktop article: How do I change a channel name?

Once you delete a channel, you'll also lose its entire conversation history. However, the OneNote sections associated with that channel will still show up in your team's SharePoint site.

On Android, tap Teams > More options More options button > Manage channels. Then tap More options More options button next to the channel name and select Delete channel.

Team owners on iOS and Windows Phone can do that from the desktop or web app. For details, see the desktop article: How do I delete a channel?
