Sort email messages

You can have Outlook automatically sort your email messages by changing the arrangement or by creating a custom sort.

Do any of the following:

Sort email messages by changing the arrangement

  1. On the View menu, point to Arrange By, and then click the arrangement that you want. For example, to sort by sender name, click From.

  2. Optionally, click the field column heading to change the sort order based on the current arrangement. For example, click A on Top to change the sort order to Z on Top.

Create a custom sort

  1. On the View menu, point to Arrange By, point to Custom Arrangements, and then click Edit Custom Arrangements.

  2. In the Custom Arrangements: Mail dialog box, click New.

  3. In the Edit Custom Arrangements dialog box, enter a name for your arrangement, and then configure it the way that you want.

  4. Click OK, and then close the Custom Arrangements: Mail dialog box.

  5. On the View menu, point to Arrange By, point to Custom Arrangements, and then click the arrangement that you created in step 3.
