This article provides the settings for configuring an email program to use Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) to access your Microsoft personal email account.

Ways to access your Microsoft personal email account

A Microsoft personal email account has an ending such as @outlook.com, @live.com, @hotmail.com or @msn.com. You can access your Microsoft personal email account in ways such as the following:

  • You can use Outlook.com, which is the web browser version of Outlook. This gives you access to everything in your account, including your email, contacts, calendar, and tasks. For more information, see Get help with Outlook.com.

  • You can use an email program such as a desktop version of Outlook. This gives you access to your email, but it gives you access to your contacts, calendar, and tasks only if the program supports Exchange ActiveSync, as is the case with Outlook 2013.

When you set up an email program such as a desktop version of Outlook to access your Microsoft email account, you have to do the following in that program:

  • Specify IMAP4 for the incoming server protocol.

  • Specify the appropriate IMAP4 settings. The following section in this article provides these settings.

IMAP4 settings for your Microsoft personal email account

To set up an email program to use IMAP4 to access your Microsoft personal email account, you have to specify the following IMAP4 settings for your account in that program:

  • Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com

  • Port number: 993

  • Encryption method: SSL
