Set up email on Windows Phone

You can set up an email account on your Windows Phone to access your email, calendar, and contacts. If you are experiencing issues adding your email, learn how to Troubleshoot email setup on mobile.

If you're looking for steps for Windows 10 phones, see Mail and Calender for Windows 10 FAQ. You can also Set up email in Outlook for PC

Note: These instructions are for devices running Windows Phone 8.1, Windows Phone 8, Windows Phone 7.5, and Windows Phone 7.

Select the type of account you want to set up on your Windows phone or tablet

Note: This includes international domains such as @outlook.co.uk or any custom domains hosted on Outlook.com.

  1. In the App list, tap Settings, and then tap Email + accounts.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If you have Windows Phone 8.1, tap Add an account > Outlook.com > Connect.

    • If you have Windows Phone 8, tap Add an account > Outlook.

Note: If you don't see Outlook.com or an Outlook option, it just means that you haven't yet signed in with a Microsoft account on your phone. To do that, see Set up the first Microsoft account on your phone.

    • If you have Windows Phone 7 or Windows Phone 7.5, tap Add an account > Windows Live.

  3. Enter your full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, and your password, and then tap Sign in.

Note: If two-step verification is set up for this account, you might be asked to verify your identity before you can continue. Follow the instructions to get a code. To learn more, see Why is Microsoft texting me?

  3. Enter your full email address, for example tony@contoso.com, and your password, and then tap Sign in. If the phone finds your account settings, your email, calendar, and contacts will be synched to your phone.

Note: If there's a problem connecting the email account, see the Microsoft Exchange or Office 365 email account section in Set up or delete an email account for Windows Phone 8 or 8.1, or in Set up or delete an email account for Windows Phone 7 or 7.5.

Note: If you are setting up a POP account, only your email will sync to your device. All your calendar and contacts remain stored on your local computer.

  1. In the App list, tap Settings > email+account > add an account > other account.

  2. Windows Phone will try to set up your email automatically, but if it can't, make sure your username and password are correct, then select Try again. If it still cannot connect, select Advanced > Internet email.

  3. In Account type, select POP or IMAP and enter your incoming and outgoing server names. Type in the full name of the server for your email provider. If you need help finding the necessary settings, see our commonly asked questions for mobile setup here.
