Set or change page margins in Word

  1. Go to Layout > Margins. 

  2. Select an option from the Margins gallery or choose Custom Margins to create custom margins.

Note: If your document contains multiple sections, the new margin will apply only to the section you're in, or to as many sections as you have selected.

Set default margins

You can change the default settings, which will be used for any new documents.

  1. Go to Layout > Margins > Custom Margins.

  2. Set your margins.

  3. Select Set As Default.

  4. Confirm your selection.

  1. Go to Page Layout > Margins and the Margins gallery appears.

  2. Choose the margin type that you want.

    Note: If your document contains multiple sections, the new margin will apply only to the section you're in, or to as many sections as you have selected.

  1. Go to Page Layout > Margins and the Margins gallery appears.

  2. Select Custom Margins.

  3. Choose Set As Default in the Page Setup dialog box.

  4. Confirm your selection.

Word automatically sets a one-inch page margin around each page. With a few clicks you can choose a different margin, or create your own. You can also set margins for facing pages, allow extra margin space to allow for binding the document, and change how margins are measured.

  1. Go to Layout > Margins.

    The Margins option is highlighted on the Layout tab.

  2. To change margins, select any of the other options in the Margins gallery. Each one shows the margin measurements.

Set default margins

When you set a default margin, it's used when you create new documents.

  • Go to Layout > Margins > Custom Margins.

  • On the Margins tab select Default.

  • Select Yes.

  1. Go to View > Print Layout.

    If you want to only change part of the document, select the text where you want to change the margins.

  2. Go to Layout > Margins.

  3. Select the margins that you want, or select Custom Margins to specify your own margin settings.

Set default margins

When you set a default margin, it's used when you create new documents.

  1. Go to View > Print Layout.

  2. Go to Layout > Margins, select Margins, and then select Custom Margins.

  3. In the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right boxes, set the margins that you want, and then select Default.

  4. When you are prompted, select Yes to change the default settings for document layout.

Use the Margins gallery to quickly change the margins for your document.

  1. If you’re not already in Edit view, select Edit Document > Edit in Word for the web.

  2. Click Page Layout > Margins.

    The Margins gallery appears. The Normal margin, which is selected by default, sets one inch margins on each side of the page.

  3. To select another page margin, select any of the other options in the Margins gallery. If none of the preset margins are what you want, choose Custom Margins to create custom margins.
