Search Japanese text

You can search Japanese text without distinguishing between hiragana and katakana, or old and new kana, or related sounds.

Important: To complete these procedures, you must first turn on Japanese language features. For more information, see Turn on Japanese language features (U.S. version only).

Search Japanese text without distinguishing between hiragana and katakana

  1. On the Edit menu, point to Find, and then click Advanced Find and Replace.

  2. In the Find what box, type the text that you want to find.

  3. Click Arrow button , select the Sounds Like (Japanese) check box, and then click Options.

  4. Under Treat as equal, select the Match hiragana/katakana check box, and then click OK.

  5. Click Find Next.

Search Japanese text without distinguishing between full-width and half-width characters

  1. On the Edit menu, point to Find, and then click Advanced Find and Replace.

  2. In the Find what box, type the text that you want to find.

  3. Click Arrow button , select the Sounds Like (Japanese) check box, and then click Options.

  4. Under Treat as equal, select the Match full/half width form check box, and then click OK.

  5. Click Find Next.

Search Japanese text without distinguishing between uppercase and lowercase letters

  1. On the Edit menu, point to Find, and then click Advanced Find and Replace.

  2. In the Find what box, type the text that you want to find.

  3. Click Arrow button , select the Sounds Like (Japanese) check box, and then click Options.

  4. Under Treat as equal, select the Match Case check box, and then click OK.

  5. Click Find Next.

Search options you can use

To designate which kind of text or ideographic differences to ignore during a search, on the Word menu, click Preferences, then click Japanese Find, and then select the appropriate check boxes. The functions of these check boxes are listed below.

Match cho-on used for vowels

Without distinguishing between " di glyph " and " zi glyph ", " du glyph " and " zu glyph "

Without distinguishing between " se glyph " and " she glyph jie glyph ", or " ze glyph " and " zi glyph jie glyph "

Without distinguishing between " ia glyph " and " iya glyph " following row glyph 1 -row and jie glyph -row characters

Match ia/iya (piano/piyano) ( ia glyph and iya glyph )

Without distinguishing between " Japanese Character 9 " and " Japanese Character 11 " before row glyph 2 -row characters

Match ki/ku (tekisuto/tekusuto) ( Japanese Character 9 / Japanese Character 11 )

And ignore punctuation characters
