Restore data to a Business Contact Manager database

If you are the database owner, you can use a backup file to restore that database to an earlier version, or replace the data in that database with data from another database. For example, if you uninstall Business Contact Manager for Outlook and later want to reinstall it, you can use your backup file to restore your data. You can restore a database from any version of Business Contact Manager for Outlook, including restoring from a backup database that was created during migration from an earlier version.

Note: If you want to restore a database that was created by someone else and your computer is running Windows Vista, you must be an administrator on the computer where you want to restore the database, and you must be running Outlook as an administrator. To use data in Business Contact Manager for Outlook that was originally backed up from another database, first restore that data to an existing database. If you have not already created a database, you can create one first, and then use the backup file to replace the data in the newly created database with the data from the backup file.

Restore data to a Business Contact Manager database

  1. On the Business Contact Manager menu, point to Database Tools, and then click Manage Database.

  2. In the Manage Database dialog box, on the Back up/Restore tab, click Restore Database.

  3. In the Database Restore dialog box, in the Select the data file to restore from box, type the location and name of the backup file, or click Browse to select a location.

    Tip: In Windows XP, the default location for the backup copy of the database is: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Business\Backups.

    Tip: In Windows Vista, the default location for the backup copy of the database is: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Business\Backups.

    If your backup files are on a removable USB memory stick, CD, floppy disk, or Zip drive, insert the removable storage type.

    Note: If your backup files are on more than one removable USB memory stick, CD, floppy disk, or Zip drive, insert the last one of the series first because the last one contains instructions about which files to restore.

  4. If your files are password-protected, type the password in the Password box, and then click OK.

You can now use your restored database.

Warning: When you restore a database that was previously shared, and your computer is part of a workgroup, the old user names and passwords are not recognized by the new computer. You must stop sharing the database and then share it again after you have restored it. In the process of sharing it, you can then regrant access to the users.

Notes: 

  • If your computer is part of a workgroup, rather than on a domain, and you restore a database to a computer that is not the same computer on which the database was originally located, the automatic association of sent and received e-mail messages to Accounts and Business Contacts will be turned off for this database. To re-create these links, on the Business Contact Manager menu, click Manage E-mail Auto-linking.
