The Recycle Bin in SharePoint Online in Office 365 for business provides a safety net when an entire site collection is deleted. When a SharePoint Online administrator deletes a site collection, it is placed in the Recycle Bin, where it is kept for 30 days before it is automatically permanently deleted. This article shows how a SharePoint Online administrator can restore a deleted site collection.
As a SharePoint Online administrator, you can view and manage deleted site collections from the SharePoint Online Administration Center Recycle Bin page. From this page, you can view site collections that are currently in the Recycle Bin, see how many days are left before the site collection is permanently deleted, and restore a deleted site collection without contacting Microsoft Support.
Note: The default retention time for deleted sites and site collections is 30 days. When a site is deleted it is sent directly to the site collection or second stage recycle bin. When a site collection is deleted it doesn't use the recycle bin but again is only stored for 30 days.
Important: When a file, folder, or item on a site or site collection is deleted the default retention time is 90 days for both site recycle bin and site collection recycle bin—also known as first stage and second stage recycle bins, respectively. The site recycle bin storage counts against your site collection storage quota and the List View Threshold. The site collection recycle bin retention starts at the same time for both recycle bins when the item is deleted, so the total maximum time is 90 days for both recycle bin. A site collection is automatically removed from the Recycle Bin after 30 days. You can restore a deleted site collection if you meet all of the following conditions:
The site collection hasn't been in the Recycle Bin longer than 30 days.
You haven't exceeded the usage quota for your SharePoint Online tenant.
You haven't exceeded the storage quota for your SharePoint Online tenant.
If you try to create a new site collection that uses the same URL as a site collection that is in the Recycle Bin, you must permanently delete the site collection in the Recycle Bin first. If your usage quota or storage quota reaches the limit you can do the following:
Delete unused items to create more space. This includes deleting items that are in the Recycle Bin.
Contact Microsoft Support to increase the size of your usage quota or storage quota.
Restore a deleted site collection
As a SharePoint Online administrator, you can view and restore a deleted site collection if you've met the conditions shown earlier.
Important: By default, sites and site collections in the Recycle Bin are deleted automatically after 30 days.
To restore a deleted site collection
Sign in to Office 365 with your work or school account.
Select the app launcher icon in the upper-left and choose Admin.
Tip: The Admin tile appears only to Office 365 administrators.
In the Office 365 admin center, on the left side of the screen, click the Admin centers widget and then click SharePoint.
On the ribbon, click Recycle Bin.
In the Recycle Bin, select the check box next to the site collection that you want to restore.
On the ribbon, click Restore Deleted Items.
