Rename pages, sections, or notebooks in OneNote for iPad or iPhone

If the contents of pages and sections in your notebook have changed enough over time so that their descriptive titles and labels no longer adequately describe the notes within them, you can rename any of the pages, sections, or section groups in your notebook — or you can rename the entire notebook itself.

Rename a page

  1. Tap the page you want to rename.

  2. When the page header text at the top of the page is selected, type the new name for the page, and then tap Return.

Rename a section

  1. Tap and hold the tab of the section you want to rename, and then at the bottom of the section list:

    • On iPad, tap the Edit Edit icon icon and choose Rename.

    • On iPhone, tap the Rename Rename icon icon.

  2. When the section tab text is selected, type the new name for the section, and then tap Done.

Rename a section group

  1. Tap and hold the tab of the section group you want to rename, and then at the bottom of the section list:

    • On iPad, tap the Edit Edit icon icon and choose Rename.

    • On iPhone, tap the Rename Rename icon icon.

  2. When the section group tab text is selected, type the new name for the section group, and then tap Done.

Rename a notebook

To help prevent broken links by accidentally renaming notebooks that are shared with other people, you’ll need to rename the notebook file at its source.

Caution:  Before renaming notebooks that you have already shared with other people, consider giving the other notebook authors some amount of advance notice about your plans to rename the notebook they’re working in. This way, the change does not unexpectedly prevent them from accessing important information in the shared notebook.

When you’re ready to rename a notebook, do the following:

  1. In OneNote, tap the Show Notebooks button Show Notebooks button to open to the notebook list.

  2. Tap and hold the notebook you want to rename. At the bottom of the notebook list, tap the Close Notebook Close Notebook icon icon, and then choose Close.

  3. In Safari or in any other Web browser, go to www.onedrive.com. If necessary, sign in with the same Microsoft account or organizational account where the notebook you want to rename is currently stored.

  4. When you are successfully signed into OneDrive, navigate to the Documents folder for your account.

  5. Tap and hold the notebook you want to rename.

You'll see a small check mark next to the notebook.

  6. On the OneDrive menu bar, tap the three dots icon, and choose Rename This File.

  7. Type the new name for the notebook, and then tap Done.

  8. On the same page, tap the notebook icon to open the renamed notebook in OneNote.
