Read a message that has restricted permissions

Information Rights Management (IRM), which is available in Outlook for Mac 2011, allows people to specify access permissions to e-mail messages. For more information about IRM in Outlook for Mac, see About restricting access with Information Rights Management. Messages that you receive with restricted permission are identified by an icon Restricted permission icon that appears next to the message in the message list.

The first time that you try to open an e-mail message that has restricted permissions, you are prompted to connect to a licensing server to verify your credentials. Downloading permissions requires that Office for Mac send your credentials (which includes your e-mail address) and information about your permission rights to the licensing server. Information contained in the e-mail message is not sent to the licensing server.

  1. Open the message that has restricted permissions.

The Info Bar appears and displays a message that your credentials must be verified before you can access the message.

  2. On the Info Bar, click Verify Credentials.

  3. Follow the instructions.
